Artist Feature: Matylda Konecka
At Contempo, we’re proud to carry a curated selection of gift ideas, souvenirs, homeware and prints featuring illustrations of some of the most exciting artists in the UK and the rest of Europe.
As a Scots gift shop, we naturally have a soft spot for artists based in Scotland, like this month’s featured artist: Matylda Konecka.
Meet Matylda Konecka
One of Scotland’s best-selling illustrators, Matylda Konecka is an award-winning artist from Wroclaw, Poland known for her surreal and whimsical paintings, illustrations, and digital graphics.
Born into a family of respected artists, Matylda would go on to use her creative foundations and graduate with a degree in Landscape Architecture at the Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences. She later moved to the UK in 2010, setting up an art studio in a 19th-century Victorian vicarage. She was also listed as one of Poland’s top five female artists in 2016.
Now based in Scotland, Matylda’s work has been displayed in multiple individual and group exhibitions as well as major competitions across Europe. Much of her art revolves around the sights of Edinburgh and the Scottish countryside, but always in keeping with her signature surrealist, fairytale aesthetic. Many of Matylda’s illustrations feature anthropomorphised animals and strange creatures set against a dreamy and sometimes slightly disturbing backdrop.
Contempo is proud to carry a mounted print with the illustration “Strange Night,” a magical abstraction of Edinburgh at night from a vantage point at the Grassmarket. As with many of Matylda’s paintings, “Strange Night” features odd, humanoid figures and objects drawn with eyes. The image draws you into a fantasy world, encouraging you to take your time and discover all the little details that bring this nighttime depiction of Edinburgh to life.
